A common cause of foot pain is a stress fracture, which is a hairline crack in the bone. It is generally thought of as an overuse injury, and it is particularly common among runners and other athletes involved in high-impact sports. Another cause is doing too much, too soon when your body is not in shape. Poor or incorrect training habits may also lead to the development of stress fractures. In addition, footwear that lacks proper cushioning and arch support may be a factor. Gradual pain during weight-bearing activity is a sign of a stress fracture. This discomfort usually subsides after resting the foot or ceasing the activity. For that reason, a stress fracture may easily go unnoticed. Other symptoms include swelling on the top of the foot, tenderness to touch, and in some cases, bruising. Further, a stress fracture may cause sharp pain when taking a step. It can take up to two months for a stress fracture to heal. During that time it is thought wise to switch to non-weight-bearing activities, such as swimming, for exercise. For help with stress fractures of the foot, it is suggested that you make an appointment with a podiatrist.

Stress fractures occur when there is a tiny crack within a bone. To learn more, contact Dr. Jeffrey Bruening from Bruening Foot & Ankle. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain free and on your feet.

How Are They Caused?

Stress fractures are the result of repetitive force being placed on the bone. Since the lower leg and feet often carry most of the body’s weight, stress fractures are likely to occur in these areas. If you rush into a new exercise, you are more likely to develop a stress fracture since you are starting too much, too soon.  Pain resulting from stress fractures may go unnoticed at first, however it may start to worsen over time.

Risk Factors

  • Gender – They are more commonly found in women compared to men.
  • Foot Problems – People with unusual arches in their feet are more likely to develop stress fractures.
  • Certain Sports – Dancers, gymnasts, tennis players, runners, and basketball players are more likely to develop stress fractures.
  • Lack of Nutrients – A lack of vitamin D and calcium may weaken the bones and make you more prone to stress fractures
  • Weak Bones – Osteoporosis can weaken the bones therefore resulting in stress fractures

Stress fractures do not always heal properly, so it is important that you seek help from a podiatrist if you suspect you may have one. Ignoring your stress fracture may cause it to worsen, and you may develop chronic pain as well as additional fractures.

Why Does My Heel Hurt in the Morning?

Heel pain and stiffness that is worse after rising from prolonged sitting or sleep may be an indicator of plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendonitis, or an injury, such as a stress fracture. Plantar fasciitis is a common ailment where the plantar fascia, the thick band of connective tissue on the sole of the foot running from the heels to the toes, becomes inflamed or sustains micro tears. Achilles tendonitis is an inflammation of the band of tissues that connect the calf muscle to the heel bone. A heel stress fracture usually comes from overuse, improper form, or intense exercise. Since other conditions may cause heel pain as well, if you are experiencing this type of pain and it does not improve with rest, wearing comfortable and supportive shoes, and gentle stretching, it is suggested that you visit a podiatrist for a proper diagnosis and treatment.

Many people suffer from bouts of heel pain. For more information, contact Dr. Jeffrey Bruening of Bruening Foot & Ankle. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Causes of Heel Pain

Heel pain is often associated with plantar fasciitis. The plantar fascia is a band of tissues that extends along the bottom of the foot. A rip or tear in this ligament can cause inflammation of the tissue.

Achilles tendonitis is another cause of heel pain. Inflammation of the Achilles tendon will cause pain from fractures and muscle tearing. Lack of flexibility is also another symptom.

Heel spurs are another cause of pain. When the tissues of the plantar fascia undergo a great deal of stress, it can lead to ligament separation from the heel bone, causing heel spurs.

Why Might Heel Pain Occur?

  • Wearing ill-fitting shoes
  • Wearing non-supportive shoes
  • Weight change
  • Excessive running

Treatments

Heel pain should be treated as soon as possible for immediate results. Keeping your feet in a stress-free environment will help. If you suffer from Achilles tendonitis or plantar fasciitis, applying ice will reduce the swelling. Stretching before an exercise like running will help the muscles. Using all these tips will help make heel pain a condition of the past.

If you have any questions please contact our offices located in Covina and Alta Loma, CA . We offer the newest diagnostic and treatment technologies for all your foot and ankle needs.

Foot Pain Facts

The feet are complex structures that are the foundation of our movement. Foot pain can be caused by something within or related to the feet or a medical condition elsewhere in the body. Feet are made up of bone, joints, ligaments, muscles and tendons, nerves, blood vessels, skin, and soft tissue. Anything affecting any of these things can cause foot pain. A virus, diabetes, or arthritis can also cause foot pain. Treatment depends on the cause of the pain and can involve anything from taking medication, exercising the feet, or, if severe, undergoing surgery. The location of the pain and how and when it occurs are used in diagnosing the cause of the problem. If you have foot pain, it is suggested that you see a podiatrist who can evaluate your feet and help you return to a comfortable state.

Pinky Toe Pain

As small as the pinky toe is, it can become extremely painful when it is injured. Pain in this toe may come from a variety of causes including a break or sprain, wearing shoes that are too tight, or a corn. This toe is more prone to injury because it is on the outside of the foot. An injury to this toe may result in swelling and pain. A broken or fractured pinky toe can happen if it is stubbed from a direct blow or a heavy object falls on it. A sprained pinky toe can happen from bumping the toe or stretching it beyond its normal range. It involves injury to the ligament of the toe. A corn, with hardened layers of skin, can develop on the small toe in response to pressure or friction and often from wearing tight-fitting shoes. Since the varied causes of pain in the pinky toe result in similar symptoms, if you have pain in this toe that does not resolve with rest, it is suggested that you visit a podiatrist for a proper diagnosis and treatment. This is important to ensure that it heals properly and does not lead to other problems.

Popular Flip Flops

Flip flops are one of the most popular summer shoes available. They are simply made and are constructed of a flat sole which is connected to a Y-shaped strap that slides between the big and second toes. Their increased popularity is a result of easy wearing, and they are available in different colors. Flip flops date back as early as 4,000 years ago, and have been made from various materials as the generations evolved. They became associated with beach living in the 1960s and are worn by people from all walks of life. Additionally, they are affordable and are generally made from inexpensive materials. They are typically lightweight, comfortable, and easy to slip on and off. In addition to allowing the feet to breathe, flip flops may provide an overall relaxed feeling in the body. If you would like to know about the benefits of wearing flip-flops, it is suggested that you consult with a podiatrist who can provide you with the information you are seeking.

Flip-flops can cause a lot of problems for your feet. If you have any concerns about your feet or ankles, contact one of our podiatrists from Bruening Foot & Ankle. Our doctors will assist you with all of your foot and ankle needs.

Flip-Flops and Feet

Flip-flops have managed to become a summer essential for a lot of people. While the shoes may be stylish and easy to slip on and off, they can be dangerous to those who wear them too often. These shoes might protect you from fungal infections such as athlete’s foot, but they can also give you foot pain and sprained ankles if you trip while wearing them.

When Are They Okay to Wear?

Flip-flops should only be worn for very short periods of time. They can help protect your feet in places that are crawling with fungi, such as gym locker rooms. Athlete’s foot and plantar warts are two common fungi that flip-flops may help protect your feet against.

Why Are They Bad for My Feet?

These shoes do not offer any arch support, so they are not ideal for everyday use. They also do not provide shock absorption or heel cushioning which can be problematic for your feet. Additionally, you may suffer from glass cuts, puncture wounds, and stubbed toes since they offer little protection for your feet.

More Reasons Why They Are Bad for Your Feet

  • They Slow You Down
  • May Cause Blisters and Calluses
  • Expose Your Feet to Bacteria

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact our offices located in Covina and Alta Loma, CA . We offer the newest diagnostic and treatment technologies for all your foot care needs.
