This condition is often inherited, and is common among diabetic patients, people who have high blood pressure or who are obese. Gout can be managed and treated by drinking plenty of water, icing the affected area, changing your diet to reduce purine levels, and by wearing compression socks. For a proper diagnosis and recommended plan for treatment, it’s suggested thank you consult with a podiatrist.

What Is Gout?

Gout is a type of arthritis caused by a buildup of uric acid in the bloodstream. It often develops in the foot, especially the big toe area, although it can manifest in other parts of the body as well. Gout can make walking and standing very painful and is especially common in diabetics and the obese.

People typically get gout because of a poor diet. Genetic predisposition is also a factor. The children of parents who have had gout frequently have a chance of developing it themselves.

Gout can easily be identified by redness and inflammation of the big toe and the surrounding areas of the foot. Other symptoms include extreme fatigue, joint pain, and running high fevers. Sometimes corticosteroid drugs can be prescribed to treat gout, but the best way to combat this disease is to get more exercise and eat a better diet.

Methods for Stretching the Feet

When the feet are properly stretched, it may positively affect the well-being of the overall body. The feet are considered to be the foundation of the body, which is why it’s important to practice effective ways to stretch different areas of the feet. When your foot is rolled on a tennis ball, you may feel the muscles quickly relax. This can be helpful after standing or walking for the majority of the day. Some patients find it beneficial to stand on their tip toes for several seconds, as this may help to relax the muscles, ligaments, and tendons. People who have flat feet may find it useful to stretch the arch, which can be accomplished by standing on the floor and gently lifting the toes. If you would like additional methods for stretching your feet, please consult with a podiatrist.

Stretching the feet is a great way to prevent injuries. If you have any concerns with your feet consult with one of our podiatrists from Bruening Foot & Ankle. Our doctors will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment.

Stretching the Feet

Being the backbone of the body, the feet carry your entire weight and can easily become overexerted, causing cramps and pain. As with any body part, stretching your feet can serve many benefits. From increasing flexibility to even providing some pain relief, be sure to give your feet a stretch from time to time. This is especially important for athletes or anyone performing aerobic exercises, but anyone experiencing foot pain or is on their feet constantly should also engage in this practice.

Great ways to stretch your feet:

  • Crossing one leg over the others and carefully pull your toes back. Do 10-20 repetitions and repeat the process for each foot
  • Face a wall with your arms out and hands flat against the wall. Step back with one foot and keep it flat on the floor while moving the other leg forward. Lean towards the wall until you feel a stretch. Hold for 30 seconds and perform 10 repetitions for each foot
  • Be sure not to overextend or push your limbs too hard or you could risk pulling or straining your muscle

Individuals who tend to their feet by regular stretching every day should be able to minimize foot pain and prevent new problems from arising.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact our offices located in Covina and Alta Loma, CA . We offer the newest diagnostic and treatment technologies for all your foot care needs.

How Do Ingrown Toenails Develop?

The medical condition that is known as ingrown toenails can produce severe pain and discomfort. It is defined as the outer edges of the nail growing into the surrounding skin, and typically affects the big toe. It can occur as a result of wearing shoes that do not have adequate room for the toes to move freely in, or from improperly trimming the toenails. Additional reasons why this may happen can include excessively sweaty feet, also referred to as plantar hyperhidrosis, as well as genetic factors, or from a toe injury. Mild relief may be found when the affected toe is soaked in warm water, followed by using a piece of cotton to gently separate the nail from the skin. For more severe cases, it is strongly advised that you seek the counsel of a podiatrist who can properly treat ingrown toenails.

Ingrown toenails can become painful if they are not treated properly. For more information about ingrown toenails, contact one of our podiatrists of Bruening Foot & Ankle. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Ingrown Toenails

Ingrown toenails occur when a toenail grows sideways into the bed of the nail, causing pain, swelling, and possibly infection.

Causes

  • Bacterial infections
  • Improper nail cutting such as cutting it too short or not straight across
  • Trauma to the toe, such as stubbing, which causes the nail to grow back irregularly
  • Ill-fitting shoes that bunch the toes too close together
  • Genetic predisposition

Prevention

Because ingrown toenails are not something found outside of shoe-wearing cultures, going barefoot as often as possible will decrease the likeliness of developing ingrown toenails. Wearing proper fitting shoes and using proper cutting techniques will also help decrease your risk of developing ingrown toenails.

Treatment

Ingrown toenails are a very treatable foot condition. In minor cases, soaking the affected area in salt or antibacterial soaps will not only help with the ingrown nail itself, but also help prevent any infections from occurring. In more severe cases, surgery is an option. In either case, speaking to your podiatrist about this condition will help you get a better understanding of specific treatment options that are right for you.

Rheumatoid Arthritis May Affect the Feet

The medical condition that is known as rheumatoid arthritis is recognized as one of the most inflammatory types of arthritis. The majority of patients who have this ailment may experience uncomfortable foot conditions. Some common symptoms that are associated with this form of arthritis can include swollen joints, limited mobility, and the foot may change shape. There can also be friction in a portion of the foot that is a result of swelling and inflammation. This may cause sacs that are filled with fluid to develop which are known as bursa. These sacs may form on the bottom of the foot, in addition to the heel pad and surrounding area. If your feet are in pain and sore, it is suggested that you schedule a consultation with a podiatrist who can properly diagnose rheumatoid arthritis.

Because RA affects more than just your joints, including the joints in your feet and ankles, it is important to seek early diagnosis from your podiatrist if you feel like the pain in your feet might be caused by RA. For more information, contact one of our podiatrists of Bruening Foot & Ankle. Our doctors will assist you with all of your podiatric concerns.

What Is Rheumatoid Arthritis?

Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disorder in which the body’s own immune system attacks the membranes surrounding the joints. Inflammation of the lining and eventually the destruction of the joint’s cartilage and bone occur, causing severe pain and immobility.

Rheumatoid Arthritis of the Feet

Although RA usually attacks multiple bones and joints throughout the entire body, almost 90 percent of cases result in pain in the foot or ankle area.

Symptoms

  • Swelling and pain in the feet
  • Stiffness in the feet
  • Pain on the ball or sole of feet
  • Joint shift and deformation

Diagnosis

Quick diagnosis of RA in the feet is important so that the podiatrist can treat the area effectively. Your doctor will ask you about your medical history, occupation, and lifestyle to determine the origin of the condition. Rheumatoid Factor tests help to determine if someone is affected by the disease.

One type of foot condition that is brought upon by dry skin is referred to as cracked heels. When the skin of your heel loses too much oil and water, it may start to feel tight, rough and itchy. Dry skin may develop for various reasons. These may include aging, the use of harsh soaps, long exposure to cold winter air, and from existing skin conditions such as eczema. When dry skin is coupled with excessive pressure on your feet, cracked heels are more likely to develop. Excessive pressure on the foot can be brought upon by obesity, standing for long periods of time throughout the day, and by wearing shoes with an open back. Open back shoes leave the pad of fat under your foot unprotected, leaving them vulnerable to harsh conditions and possible cracking. For more information on how to prevent cracked heels from developing, and for advice on treating this condition, it is recommended you consult with a podiatrist.

Cracked heels are unsightly and can cause further damage to your shoes and feet. If you have any concerns, contact one of our podiatrists from Bruening Foot & Ankle. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

How Do You Get Them?

Dry skin is the number one culprit in creating cracked heels. Many athletes, walkers, joggers, and even swimmers suffer from cracked heels. Age and skin oil production play a role to getting cracked heels as well.

Promote Healing

Over the counter medicines can help, especially for those that need instant relief or who suffer from chronic dry feet.

Wear Socks – Wearing socks with medicated creams helps lock in moisture.

Moisturizers – Applying both day and night will help alleviate dryness which causes cracking.

Pumice Stones – These exfoliate and remove dead skin, which allows for smoother moisturizer application and better absorption into the skin.

Change in Diet

Eating healthy with a well-balanced diet will give the skin a fresh and radiant look. Your body responds to the kinds of food you ingest. Omega-3 fatty acids and zinc supplements can also revitalize skin tissue.

Most importantly, seek professional help if unsure how to proceed in treating cracked heels. A podiatrist will help you with any questions or information needed.
