Possible Causes of Hammertoes

A condition referred to as hammertoe is easier to identify than it is to treat. This condition causes the middle of the toe to bend, causing the bottom of the toe to be in a downward position. Corns or calluses may often accompany hammertoe, which is caused by the friction the affected joint endures while rubbing against the shoe. There may be several causes responsible for the development of hammertoes, including lack of strength within the foot that may be a result of having diabetes in addition to a predisposed inherited gene. It’s common for this ailment to develop from wearing incorrect shoes that cause the toes to be cramped together, such as high heels. Recent research has suggested that there may be a connection between hammertoes and other conditions such as arthritis, flat feet, and pain on the bottom of the foot. Proper treatment may consist of splinting the affected toe, and surgery may be an option if the affliction is severe. Please schedule a consultation with a podiatrist for treatment options and additional information about hammertoes.

Hammertoe is a foot deformity that affects the joints of the second, third, fourth, or fifth toes of your feet. It is a painful foot condition in which these toes curl and arch up, which can often lead to pain when wearing footwear.

Symptoms

  • Pain in the affected toes
  • Development of corns or calluses due to friction
  • Inflammation
  • Redness
  • Contracture of the toes

Causes

Genetics – People who are genetically predisposed to hammertoe are often more susceptible

Arthritis – Because arthritis affects the joints in your toes, further deformities stemming from arthritis can occur

Trauma – Direct trauma to the toes could potentially lead to hammertoe

Ill-fitting shoes – Undue pressure on the front of the toes from ill-fitting shoes can potentially lead to the development of hammertoe

Treatment

Orthotics – Custom made inserts can be used to help relieve pressure placed on the toes and therefore relieve some of the pain associated with it

Medications – Oral medications such as anti-inflammatories or NSAIDs could be used to treat the pain and inflammation hammertoes causes. Injections of corticosteroids are also sometimes used

Surgery – In more severe cases where the hammertoes have become more rigid, foot surgery is a potential option

How Do I Know If I Have Toenail Fungus?

If you notice that your toenails are turning yellow and becoming thicker, you may have what is referred to as toenail fungus. It’s a common ailment, and the majority of the population will develop this condition at some point in their lives. The fungus thrives on living in warm and moist areas, and the feet and toenails are a perfect place for this to occur. Some additional symptoms may include the nail appearing lumpy, causing an unsightly appearance. In severe cases, the nail may chip and crumble as a result of the affected area becoming brittle. Treatment options include wearing socks that allow the feet to breath and choosing to wear shoes specifically designed for public showers or pools. A consultation with a podiatrist is suggested if this condition affects you or if additional information is desired.

For more information about treatment, contact one of our podiatrists of Bruening Foot & Ankle. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Toenail Fungus Treatment

Toenail fungus is a condition that affects many people and can be especially hard to get rid of. Fortunately, there are several methods to go about treating and avoiding it.

Antifungals & Deterrence

Oral antifungal medicine has been shown to be effective in many cases. It is important to consult with a podiatrist to determine the proper regiment for you, or potentially explore other options.

Applying foot powder on the feet and shoes helps keep the feet free of moisture and sweat.

Sandals or open toed shoes – Wearing these will allow air movement and help keep feet dry. They also expose your feet to light, which fungus cannot tolerate. Socks with moisture wicking material also help as well.

Typically, the feet grow during pregnancy and in many instances, will remain bigger. There are numerous bones, ligaments, and tendons that the feet are comprised of, and it’s common that they tend to loosen and relax during pregnancy. The additional weight gain that pregnant women endure will cause the feet to become wider, in addition to stretching the joints. A distinguishing difference between foot growth and swollen feet is to notice differences in how your feet feel and look all day. Your feet will tend to be bigger at night if they’re swollen and will remain bigger all day and night if they’re growing. There are several ways to reduce the chances of incurring larger feet, and these may include keeping as much excess weight off as possible, performing proper foot exercises and stretches that will strengthen the feet, and possibly wearing supportive insoles.

Pregnant women with swollen feet can be treated with a variety of different methods that are readily available. For more information about other cures for swollen feet during pregnancy, consult with one of our podiatrists from Bruening Foot & Ankle. Our doctors will attend to all of your foot and ankle needs.

What Foot Problems Can Arise During Pregnancy?

One problem that can occur is overpronation, which occurs when the arch of the foot flattens and tends to roll inward.  This can cause pain and discomfort in your heels while you’re walking or even just standing up, trying to support your baby.

Another problem is edema, or swelling in the extremities. This often affects the feet during pregnancy but tends to occur in the later stages.

How Can I Keep My Feet Healthy During Pregnancy?

  • Wearing orthotics can provide extra support for the feet and help distribute weight evenly
  • Minimize the amount of time spent walking barefoot
  • Wear shoes with good arch support
  • Wear shoes that allow for good circulation to the feet
  • Elevate feet if you experience swelling
  • Massage your feet
  • Get regular, light exercise, such as walking, to promote blood circulation to the feet

Recent research has shown that a strong connection exists between conditions concerning the feet and obesity. The feet and ankles experience excessive stress from bearing the body’s additional weight, and concerns such as arthritis and heel pain can be commonplace. The tendons and ligaments may also be affected, and this may possibly cause the desire to exercise to gradually diminish as the weight increases. When foot pain exists, mobility may lessen, and this is often a result of the added pressure the bones of the foot must endure. Being obese may cause a multitude of foot issues, including fallen arches, gout, and tendonitis. If you are affected by this condition, wearing the correct shoes may aid in maintaining comfort. These may include choosing shoes that are wide enough and have ample support, in addition to having proper flexibility and cushioning. It’s advised to schedule a consultation with a podiatrist if you are affected by obesity and have foot or ankle pain.

Obesity has become very problematic at this point in time and can have extremely negative effects on the feet. If you’re an obese individual and are concerned about your feet, contact one of our podiatrists from Bruening Foot & Ankle. Obesity and Your Feet

Since your feet are what support your entire weight when standing, any additional weight can result in pain and swelling. Being overweight is one of the main contributors to foot complications.

Problems & Complications

Extra Weight – Even putting on just a few extra pounds could create serious complications for your feet. As your weight increases, your balance and body will shift, creating new stresses on your feet. This uneven weight distribution can cause pain, even while doing the simplest tasks, such as walking.

Diabetes – People who are overweight are at serious risk of developing type-2 diabetes, which has a drastic impact on the health of your feet. As you get older, your diabetes might worsen, which could lead to loss of feeling in your feet, sores, and bruises. You could also become more prone to various infections.

Plantar fasciitis – Pressure and stress that is placed on muscles, joints, and tendons can trigger plantar fasciitis, which is an inflammation of tissue that forms along the bottom of the foot.
